PLACERES GTO_02

Todavía no sucede.  En eso estoy.
Del cuerpo:
Danza Africana … Mesturas Danza Africana.

Me fascina.

Bueno, a continuarse …

14 a 20h, domingo 14 a 21h
Encargada: Alejandra.

¿Quién me acompaña?

Somos Coreanos
La Madera

Vamos, queridos lectores ... ¿y sus propias reseñas?

 ... English:
What can I say, six months after I’d every intention of posting another blog about the pleasures of our city?  Just that a couple of people died, and then there were concerts to prepare for … And in any case, there is so much happening in our Guanajuato that JIMINY, it’s not so easy to stay on top of it all.  I hope no one was expecting any deathless prose because there’s no time! Happy Holidays!!
I feel it important to mention that when I talk about our city I speak in relative terms.  It’s my conviction that not one single child of Guanajuato should grow up without entering the Teatro Juárez, at least twice, to stand right next to that Steinway while someone plays Beethoven or Brahms or one of those guys, to feel how that instrument vibrates. It still isn’t happening: I’m working on it.

Corporal pleasures:
Danza Africana … Mesturas Danza Africana. Incredible.  But not, alas, any more. One cycle comes to a close and another opens.  Fortunately, there’s still Raqs Sharqi (Egyptian Classical Dance) taught by Catherine (Cathie) Gielis.  We start classes again on Tuesday 6 January 2015. More info: catilie_gto@yahoo.fr or via Inbox en Facebook.
Various versions of Zumba … at the very VERY beginning there was the legendary Guanajuato Gym. Then there was MoveOut  on Sangre de Cristo –really good because they were the first gym here –as far as I know—to put a wood floor. MoveOut is really impressive, because believe me, many other gyms have appeared here, all of which have spent a lot –if not a boatful— of money … and MoveOut is the only one still afloat. NEVERTHELESS … you have to evolve, you have to think about new tendencies and discoveries! … you gotta do something to convince the guy who teaches AeroCombat, and the gal who does AeroStep -or whatever they’re called- to every once in a while try out a new routine, or just some new MUSIC for the love of heaven.   So when Karla arrived –who it was totally clear from the outset is a born teacher—with a new routine prepared for practically every class … well, it was a foregone conclusion.  First she left for the cozy little space in Puertecito –where, by the way, Gerardo Luna still gives several very respectable classes—; and a few months later, opened her own tiny studio in San Sebastián #80, a few meters down the street from the baseball stadium and right across from the church. It’s a darling little space and she put mirrors!  And a wood floor!  Not at all luxurious but very professional.
Karla is giving a level of classes which you practically don’t see here: Circuit Zumba and Seated Zumba (I don’t know what the English names are) which is in a chair – in effect the only way you get any abs work in Zumba. You might find classes like this in León, and certainly in the DF; but I think that here in Guanajuato Karla is still the only teacher doing this.
Other Pleasures …
This dates from early September, just before Independence Day celebrations … in the Centro Histórico: Tuesday 9 September, on the way to the vets with Azabacha, for her last vaccines, we peeked into a shop –I think it was newly-opened at that time—on Pocitos just across from the Centro Cultural Pocitos 81. Clothing both knitted and crocheted, made by the two lovely ladies who are there selling their work.
I’ve no idea if they’re still open –hope so!—but they are certainly worth a visit to see what they have for Los Reyes.
So while we’re there chatting, comes by a couple selling dulces típicos (traditional sweets), and they’re giving samples, and their stuff is DELICIOUS.  My favourite is the jamoncillo  … although I must say I adore ate (AH-tay) de membrillo (quince), which they also have but which I didn’t taste so I can’t tell you what their ate is like. Their names are Ana y Ángel.  Cells 473 560 4636 and 477 145 4710 (León) and email zavala48@live.com .

And now at long last for those gustatory pleasures …
Sette Caffé
In the MIQ
Always elegant, always a pleasure!  And the café, mmmmmm.
Cafetal
On Sangre de Cristo at the corner of Temezcuitate, across from the Juan B. Diosdado school.
Not in the least elegant but a little more economical, super-friendly, with looooong hours and WOW!  The coffee is just delicious.
The only coffee I have in my own kitchen is the Obscuro Francés (dark) roast and the Quimera (a little lighter), roasted in the Cafetal.

Joya de Lobos:
Those ladies from Pénjamo with their wonderful goat cheese.
I love this stuff. Just as tasty as the French chêvre –they imported a couple of Frenchmen to help them get it right!—and compares favourably to that made in Querétaro and Veracruz.
I think the person who sells it here in Guanajuato is still Gabriela de Silva.  Cell 473 117 05 47.
Familia Rodríguez: jaliscienses with cheese
Embajadoras market, Sundays only from about 8AM to 4PM. Their stand is on the right, after Banamex and after the first door into the old part of the market, the one of only one floor.  This is the first time I’ve tasted cheese of such quality here: it’s really extraordinary. They have both fresh and aged Cotija, panela, Oaxaca-style asadero (which is a bit like string cheese), and others.  Plus a green chorizo whose ingredients include parsley, cilantro, and almonds.
Once more I want to sing the praises of Frutería Torres del Baratillo – proprietor el Morenito, a.k.a. el “More” – because they now have Fresh Ginger!! Among other things, like often bean-sprouts.
I want to comment about vegetables like kale.  I know some people had their noses more than a tad out of joint with el Morenito because the only kind of kale he could get was the pre-packed kind which of course is garbage because it starts to rot almost instantly.  Not to mention the PACKAGING per se.
This is a Primordial Example, dear friends, of the Slow Food Situation: 1) How do you connect vegetable farmers and producers with local sellers –i.e. shortcut the typical agribusiness network? – el Morenito has done this with asparagus and, I believe, with fresh ginger, for example.  And 2) How do you motivate the farmers to cultivate these kinds of vegetables AND get them a fair price for their crop? This situation MUST be resolved if Mexico is not to fall terminally into the hands of the agribusiness-Monsanto Bad Guys.  It means educating EVERYONE, from farmer to distributor to seller to consumer.  To be continued …
So here is a list of my latest “discoveries” right now … just please remember that some of these places have had their doors open for weeks or even months, so I really can’t call this news, hahaha …

Jamón jamón
Explanade of the Teatro Cervantes (Plaza Allende)
Cheeses of goat and cow’s milk, from México and France; hams from México and Spain (although the Ibérico still hadn’t arrived when I stopped by on 22 December) … the place is a mini-local only slightly larger than the ¡HA HA! on Pocitos, of a dazzling simplicity and its very own rustic style. They say they give a little wine with the ham and cheese …
2PM – 8PM, Sundays 2PM – 9PM.
The young woman in charge: Alejandra.  Usually also there is her adorable dog Brizma, like a miniature Estrella (my blonde dog) and mostly white.
Puerta Roja
As well as the now well-known bread … COOKIES.  I’ve loved the oatmeal ones since the beginning; a little while ago I noticed that they had a new variety.  It turns out they are chocolate chip, but rather than with great big chips, they are more like chocolate gratings; and with a touch of rosemary and sea salt! YUMMM! Now they also have boxes of Christmas cookies: the small one at 60 pesos and the larger one at 150.
The problem is they are closed from 24 December to 5 January.  What is that about???

Las Cazuelas
Sangre de Cristo right across from la Puerta Roja
Before, they had a stand in La Sauceda, well-loved for its excellent traditional cooking. Now they’ve come into town, with the same delicious dishes, cheerful and courteous service, and in a frankly gorgeous place: an old building lovingly preserved with all sorts of touches like testigos of the original stone, tejemanil and wooden beams in the high ceilings.  Just to be in that space is a major treat, not to mention the food. I’ve been told that they open at 8am for breakfast.

Habibi
Across from the Esplanade of the Teatro Cervantes (Plaza Allende)
So just in case there’s anyone who hasn’t noticed yet … falafel, hummous, tabbouleh, and other delicacies of Middle-eastern food, prepared in what appear to be almost antiseptic conditions. All of it delicious, not to mention really economical and really healthy! Go and have a taste!
100 Montaditos
Plaza de la Paz, more or less across from the Banco del Bajío
What you do is: go with a friend or two and each of you orders what calls to you. Starting at 15 pesos, there are a whole bunch of tapas-like things “montadas” –mounted on— mini-bolillos (tiny bread rolls); hence the name of the place. I went with a couple of dear friends who are real lovers of good food and everything we tried was really tasty. You order your glass of wine or beer or soda to go along with your food.  You pay when you pick up your food and drink: a very sensible idea because at the end there’s no hassle about who owes how much of the check.

Escarola
Calle Pocitos, frente al Museo Diego Rivera
I promised a report about this place back in June: goodness me, how dreadfully late I am! So the fact is that just THE PLACE Escarola is enchanting, a kind of urban oasis.  You go in, you go to the terrace which in effect is where the restaurant is, and it’s hard to believe that you’re barely 15 feet away from the street with all its noise and traffic (well, as much traffic as you can get on Calle Pocitos, which thank heavens is not very much).  Good salads, baguettes, light food of that kind; and also food for vegetarians and even vegans.

La vie en Rose
Calle Catarranas, to one side of the Teatro Principal
I think that by eight days after it opened, there can have been few people in Cuévano who didn’t know about La Vie en Rose, the new pâtisserie française.  Everything totally authentic, as far as I can tell, and delicious To Die For.  I still haven’t tried any of the main dishes like boeuf bourguignon or croque-monsieur but the pastries and desserts are frankly Out Of This World.

Los Campos
Just coming up from the Baratillo where the Callejón de las Verduras begins
And now, after a long and tenacious battle, with wine and liquor!!
I stopped by a few days ago to confirm the wine-and-liquor part, and what should I see hanging in the shadowy part all the way in the back … but HAMS!!  And looking like real Jamón Ibérico! Michael explained that –in line with the philosophy of this excellent couple (she, a chef, from Aguascalientes; he, Anglophone Canadian, a sommelier) of promoting local producers, they found a gentleman outside of León who is curing ham according to the recipe of his Spanish uncle. Michael promises a degustación towards the end of January.  Stay tuned!!
Gelatería Giannini
With the Teatro Cervantes behind you and Sangre de Cristo on your left, it’s the building on the right, at about one o’clock.  There’s a sign out on the street.  I think the Café Voltaire is still there in the same building.
Various friends have been rhapsodising in FB for several months now, about the new Gelatería up near the Teatro Cervantes.  Finally I poked my nose in, in August I believe and YES, this is insanely good.  He’s Italian, she’s Mexican … another one of these multicultural romances which is doing amazing stuff for our palates here. There are gelati –water-based, like sorbet--; and semifreddo which is like some hyper-evolved ice-cream.  They also make pastas and other main-dish sorts of things which to date I haven’t sampled.  I imagine that in the cold weather when gelati are less appetising will be the moment to try the pastas.  Who wants to come with me??
Corazón Parlante
Paseo de la Presa and another new one in Sopeña
The main branch in Paseo de la Presa is a delight, particularly in hot weather.  I find it a very agreeable place for breakfast or brunch. Reasonable prices, food not particularly gourmet but very tasty.  The new one in Sopeña is in yet another old building and though I haven’t gone in and looked about it seems as though they’r using the space in a nice way. I think in la Presa they have beer and wine permission but not in Sopeña … but check it out.
So here are two places which have been here for AGES which I still haven’t checked out:
Somos Coreanos in Avenida Juárez across from the Jardín Reforma
La Madera behind the Teatro Juárez

What are YOUR reviews??

National Security in Atlanta

2014-10-09 THOUGHTS ON THE ASO LOCKOUT

I warn you up front, this will be one of those non-Buddhist postings.  Expect inflammatory rhetoric. Fasten your seatbelts, etc …

Here is where you can donate.  I am far from rolling in greenbacks right now, raising money to get Monarca out to the world and all … but I’m sending my $25. When you read about Maestro Robert Spano putting his own money where his mouth is ( http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/24/arts/music/atlanta-symphony-orchestra-music-director-backs-performers.html?_r=0 , I’m sure you’ll want to do the same. SO JOIN ME!!

Here's where:
http://www.atlsymphonymusicians.com/donate.html

I’m going to continue posting stuff about this, because, I repeat: it is as important as National Security.  It IS national security.  What does it say about the US that an arts organization like the ASO can be allowed to go out of business?  In my humble opinion, that is up there with high infant mortality, or throwing acid in the faces of girls who want to go to school, as an indicator of quality of life.
Here goes:

Such a convenient narrative, this one.  Let’s sample a couple of juicy key points:
“There’s no more money like this any more.”  Meaning, money like that which is necessary to support a Symphony Orchestra.  Or to have much art at all, really and truly.  Because, count on it, once the symphony orchestras are gone there will start to be arguments made for getting rid of chamber orchestras because there isn’t any more of that kind of money either.
Oh really?  And the money which many rather low-level people on Wall Street make?  Or the money that some people on the boards of such institutions make … is there no money like that any more?  Is that not around anymore either?
Really.  People who do not have to worry –who have never had to worry for even a minute, let alone a day— about how they would deal with one of their children breaking an arm, or decent pregnancy and birth care of a wife or sister … are saying things about musicians like: “It does make me wonder … I’m not calling them crazy. I’m just wondering if they’re crazy.” This was Mr. Douglas Hertz, chair of the Woodruff Board, talking about some existential crisis which he appears to be having about this whole business.  This remark of his edges up, I swear, to the “when did you stop beating your wife” sort of commentary.  How exactly was this supposed to be constructive?  Or was it just supposed to demonstrate his essential –and maybe EXISTENTIAL— ignorance about Art In General? Or demonstrate that frankly, my dear, he just Doesn’t Give A Damn?  Like some sort of Good Ol’ Boy or something. I decline to speculate further because it would be insulting … for everyone’s … intelligence.
For me this is a slightly –but only very slightly—more sophisticated version of the now tried-and-true USian Blame The Worker  litany.  A pretty tired one, by now.  Do I need to go over how the workers of Detroit somehow ended up being responsible for the numerous and Really Embarrassing errors of management, both in strategic and business planning and in terms of just plain reading the scientific evidence?  I thought not.
Then there is the idea that to get rid of  this highbrow art is "what The People Really Want anyway, so Who are WE to deny the popular taste?"
Now this is really rich.  Here are these people salivating to step up to bat and hold forth about how they are really populist, really For The People.  All just because they have managed to develop some twisted discourse that you can’t play Mozart or Brahms or Copland for Jane & Joe Sixpack because “people like that can’t appreciate this kind of music”.  And anyway, J & J can’t afford the ticket price.
WOW. Might the former be because education budgets have been cut to the bone and jeez, there’s no money for a music –or art, or literature, teacher any more?  Might the latter be because both Js have been laid off and now have no health coverage? Do you need to ask?: they got laid off because of the suicidally stupid business “decisions” of these “managers” who suddenly and inexplicably are qualified to judge the viability of a Symphony Orchestra.  People who, I intuit, can barely manage a visit to their own hearts.
In other words, the justification for not having art in people’s lives is because of a situation which these “managers” themselves created. Pretty rich, almost as rich as they are themselves, except in their spirits where they are appallingly poor.
I don’t want to belittle anyone’s contribution to Society As A Whole, but might it not be possible that Each and Every One of these ASO musicians is making more of a contribution than some mid-level cutie on Wall Street, or a mediocre MBA who thinks classical music is something that you use to go to sleep?  Just sayin’, as they say.
And anyway, which one is making more of a contribution to the general Balance Of Beauty in the Universe? Do you have to even think about your answer to this?
I already warned you this was not going to be my Most Buddhist Self, people, so no reproaches please.
It breaks my heart, it makes me cry, to read:
“Though they’ve been locked out of Symphony Hall, the ASO players have not stopped playing. They’ve played chamber music at a local club, Terminal West, and Friday night, about 35 players will perform two shows at the 525-seat theater at Oglethorpe University. They’re being led by Richard Prior, the Emory Symphony Orchestra’s conductor.
After walking the picket line earlier in the week, the players were thrilled to be onstage at Oglethorpe for a rehearsal and to be joined by members of the Atlanta Mozart Choir.
‘It feels a little exciting and subversive,’ said Michael Kurth, the bassist helping organize the performances. ‘It actually feels exhilarating to be with my colleagues, and just proper. It’s what I’m supposed to be doing.’

This is what they DO, dear ones, it IS what they are supposed to be doing.   And you know what else?  It is subversive – because with every beautiful note they play together, in love and solidarity, they are sowing doubt in the mind of every listener.  Doubt about the pseudo-values espoused by people like Mr Douglas Hertz, whose deathless --as in Night of the Living Passive-Aggressive Undead-- words I quote above.

And with the Atlanta Mozart Choir, so beautiful.  It is no accident that one of the primary tools for union organizers in Europe in the late 19th century, and later in the USA, was the choir, or some sort of choral group.  There are few things that can wake the heart and move the soul like voices together in harmony: it’s a model for solidarity and unity of purpose.

I totally understand that someone may have been born to read the Mysterious Tarot of the Stock Market or know what Banks and Currencies will Do Tomorrow, or any one of those things.  But the happy fact of the matter is that these colleagues of mine do something that materially improves the lives of those around them, every day. Just that simple.  How many Bankers and Currency Traders can say the same?

Here's where again:
http://www.atlsymphonymusicians.com/donate.html

I repeat: this is as important as National Security.  It IS national security.

SALUD PÚBLICA EN GUANAJUATO

-->

Please scroll down for English ...

Guanajuato Pleasures

Dear all,
Quite a while ago it occurred to me that it would be fun to send around some sporadic notes sharing things which I am enjoying here in this city of Guanajuato --where I have the great good fortune to live—either temporarily or oh well, less temporarily.  Since life is pretty temporary, right? CARPE DIEM.
Anyway … Finally, after inexplicable delays, I am starting to do this.
Now, various friends are doing similar things, so extensive have been the changes in our beautiful city (and organic I believe, on the whole) … Those of you who know me know that I turn into a hermit between tours, so I’m not always up on the Very Latest Sensation; thus I can assure you that I write all this in the spirit of sharing these pleasures of mine, which is what we should do with pleasures, right? –be they of the palate, the ear, the heart … whatever; rather than being the First to Discover the Latest Sensation.
I feel that in Mexico we are un a unique position: without going into more detail, we can learn from the successes and the errors of our neighbours to the north as well as to the south; and choose, if we have the courage to do so, our own way.  We have an ancestral diet –to mention just one thing—which is among the healthiest on the planet. We have one of the most vibrant and creative performing arts scenes on the planet; and a government which –so far!—supports the arts and public transport. I mean, whatever its problems in other areas may be: which are not exactly insubstantial … but more on that another day.
Examining my own tastes, I realize that many of these things which I enjoy are very Slow Food: that is, they come from local sources, the income they generate is returned to the people of this place instead of ending up in the pockets of corporations who have neither connection with --nor commitment to-- Guanajuato. That  should do to start with.
And then, since I take great delight in the pleasures of the table, it’s logical that the great majority of the things I mention here have to do with eating.  But not all.  Perhaps it would be better to say that what interest me are pleasures of any kind, corporeal as well as mental; even, sometimes, spiritual.  So here is the first number of these Pleasures of Guanajuato … let’s hope it’s not the only one!
I want to start by saying that some three and a half years ago, I recovered my sense of gratitude at living here.  I mean, I hadn’t lost it exactly, but between one thing and another it wasn’t as present in me as it had been.  I have a very clear memory of intensely desiring to have again that sensation of extraordinary good fortune which I had during the whole Fulbright (more correctly, Fulbright-García Robles) year in Guanajuato, which was my first whole year here.
As sometimes happens, without thinking about it much, just wanting it, it happened. And you know what, dear reader? – better yet: the things which are now happening here are things which 15 years ago –seems impossible, right? but I arrived here in August of 1999— were a dream or totally unthinkable.
I know we have a way to go here in this UNESCO World Heritage Zone City  --and caramba, it’s not a little bit of a way—but nevertheless, certain things are better here. Just to mention two: there are fewer street dogs –thanks principally, in my view, to the titanic work of VOLUNTEER organizationes like Amigos de los Animales – and therefore, less animal excrement in the streets; and second, there is more local economic activity.
I’m talking not just about the micro-local of Xocolate in the Plaza del Baratillo (see below), or about the Taller de Joyería Escultórica (Sculptural Jewelry Workshop, see the next installment) of Cathie Gielis –native of Belgium but naturalized Mexican for some years now— in Casa Cuatro)—; but also of countrywomen with products made from nopal; and with  other products like soaps, handmade from local herbs and vegetables.  I’m talking also about the women in the Mercado Hidalgo who ten years ago sold their cheeses –from goats’ and cows’ milk—as though they were nothing and now have little labels on them.  This is not some process of gentrification: on the contrary, it’s a sign of pride in their own work and its results.  These women, at least, are starting to find a way around that terrible tendency we have, to undervalue our own human capital.
In another post I’ll start to speak about the social and sociological questions, at least those of my own barrio, which is really the only one I know. All this is very uppermost in my mind because of the neighbourhood project which we recently delivered, I and the Asociación Vecinal (Neighbourhood Association) to which I belong. Soon …
But for now, to what I promised …
Los Campos: Is there a better example of the cosmopolitan salad which our city is becoming? Hard to imagine: she, a Real Chef, from Aguascalientes; he a sommelier, from Anglophone Canada. The food is astoundingly imaginative and inventive. Not to mention the presentation, which is as delicious as the food and which totally reveals the pride which this couple-team have in their gastronomic creation.
And another thing: the first time I went (when they were still in Alonso) I was bowled over when I saw that they have Cloth Napkins. (Lots of lights, drum roll!!)   Cloth Napkins, dear readers, just think about it: this signifies, for a restaurant, a near-titanic reduction in garbage.  Besides which it is a thousand times, I mean a bazillion times, more agreeable more pleasant, more civilized.
The Only Caveat, and really The ONLY one, is that as of the beginning of July they still –in spite of the most diligent and tenacious efforts with the Relevant Authorities— do not have their permit to serve alcohol. If it were permitted, I would say to you that you should bring your bottles of fine tequila and mezcal, of good  wine … and in some fashion it would be possible to serve them.  But this is not permitted, and so I shall not say it.
This delight which is Los Campos is to be found just coming up from the Baratillo: with your back to Cantarranas and the fountain, it looks like a “Y”.  If you take the left arm you will go to the Compañía.  The right arm will take you to the “Callejón of Vegetables”.  Beginning the right arm you see their sign.  I believe that for now they are opening from 3pm to 11PM. Enjoy!!
Barely five meters from Los Campos, you will find The Chocolate Place: Xocolate, spelled somewhere between native Nahuatl and Spanish.  And indeed, it is practically a sacred site. Various chocolates: bars from white to 95% cacao, I swear! When they opened up about three years ago, my dear friend the renowned poet Lirio Garduño exclaimed, “Civilization has arrived in Guanajuato!” Forget about Godiva Chocolates, all you who pass through these doors.  This is a different league.
Suffice it to say that on a recent visit I tasted  some new varieties invented by the proprietors (he from Puebla, she from the Bajío), among them a dark chocolate with balsamic vinegar and I don’t remember what else; milk chocolate with epazote and … I won’t reveal it, I’ll just say that in general for me milk chocolate doesn’t even qualify as chocolate but in this case I make a very happy exception. And that always astounding chocolate con chipotle, ayayay madre mía.  When I am in Austerity Mode, instead of buying individual chocolates I just buy one of those wheels of chocolate de mesa and instead of making chocolate to drink I just eat it, with the greatest possible delight, yummmm.
Frutería Torres Hmnos, a.k.a. la Frutería del Baratillo, a.k.a. la frutería del moreno:  Everyone should already know about this,  but for the few people who don’t … some three years ago in the Spring I was amazed to see ASPARAGUS in this vegetable store; as well as blackberries, blueberries, now kale …  and various other more “exotic” vegetables and fruits.  Aside from the usual extensive selection of stuff, always varying depending on the season of course.  It’s very interesting to me that we’re seeing these sorts of things here. Ten years ago, when I was in San Miguel de Allende  (SMA) with Ehecalli for a chamber music concert, I saw country men on the street selling asparagus; at the time I figured it was surely because there were foreigners in SMA and thus a market for such a thing.  But in Guanajuato at that time, not a trace: just in the Mega or the Comercial Mexicana (the two US-style supermarkets here) all dried up and at a very inflated price. And there are plenty of Mexicans who like asparagus, it’s not just a foreign taste! Until it appeared with el More (short for el Moreno, the proprietor of the Baratillo vegetable store) … and what asparagus it was and is!  Costs anywhere between 40 and 70 pesos the kilo and so fresh it might have come from your own kitchen garden. Be aware … !
Various reasons this interests me, but at the head of the list is that this frutería doesn’t sell to a fancy gringo or foreigner clientele – in any case the great majority of the foreigners here are better-endowed intellectually than financially!—no my dears, this frutería sells to nationals; and I believe that no one who works there speaks anything other than Spanish.  The foreigners who shop there do so because they know that the fruit and veggies are a thousand times better and fresher than what you generally find in the Comercial or the Mega, all wrinkled and old and overpriced. Those supermarkets have their uses, I’m the first to acknowledge, but good fresh local produce is generally not among them.
So, dear ones, this is ours.  Buy here, in these places and these businesses, take an interest in them, treasure them.
La Puerta Roja (The Red Door): really Good Bread! …  As some of you know, there are times when I become a bit of a Hermit.  Sometimes I’m not here because I have concerts in other parts of the planet; and then when I get home I’m preparing for the next trip, or just plain resting. So it wasn’t until this past May that one fine day, strolling down Sangre de Cristo, the penny dropped that there was something new there.  Caramba, I said to myself, a bakery! I think that first time I didn’t even go in, but shortly thereafter, I did.
It’s a delightful place: one of those old buildings, one of the rather humble ones, a cozy space on a human scale, one of those you just can’t imitate, you know?  They’ve done the minimum to the space, in a very respectful fashion.  As well as being a bakery, they’re a restaurant, offering a couple of salads and soups, various baguettes: light food. I confess I haven’t yet tried the food, so far just the bread.
So far just the bread is enough.  Because they offer a well-considered selection of breads, all made with sourdough yeast –which is the yeast you get, with luck, when you mix together some flour, a little honey or sugar, and air, my dears: those miraculous microbes in the air, because in the air are microbes which make, or change into, yeast.  This process requires considerable patience and is way less sure than just opening an envelope of yeast … but the results are truly marvellous. Yet another artisanal process.
You see? This is ours.
Massage, a.k.a. the Amazing Flores Sisters … and their salsas! A couple of months ago I went into the Frutería del Baratillo and in the next doorway saw the Amazing Flores Sisters, both of them. Who, amazingly and with their usual tenacity and imagination, had opened another place.  They are really good masajistas (masseuses), both of them.  I think they were the first real ones here; and they seem never to give up.  Now you can get a Massage Express for feet or back, or your whole-body no-express massage.  Now, more or less sporadically, they also have these salsas (sauces) which are, as we say here, de poca madre (drop-dead delicious).  The two I’ve tried are peanuts with chile and ginger; and roast chile with a bit of vinegar.   More artesanía. My respects.

Casa Cuatro: Yoga y Pilates with Tlathui Benavides … OK, having said all the foregoing, in Casa Cuatro there’s Yoga and Pilates with Tlathui Benavides, who besides being an incredibly gifted dancer is a really fine instructor of these two very important disciplines.  And really, for everyone, whether you are 20 or 60 years old, man or woman.
Also right in the Plaza del Baratillo, the Centro Bharati: where there’s yoga with Alejandra as well.  Now are you starting to see the variety we have here?  It’s astounding. And in the Centro Bharati there’s good Indian vegetarian food and a nice little boutique of Indian clothes.  YUMMM!!

A late addition: Escarola … in Pocitos #38, almost exactly in front of the Casa-Museo Diego Rivera. They just opened and I haven’t tried the food yet; but the other day, returning from taking Azabacha for her vaccines, we poked our heads in and saw the place and the menu.  Both really lovely.  It seems there are options fro vegans, for carnivores, and for vegetarians.  I shall do everything possible to eat there soon and deliver a report ;=))
